Weekend Service
[Home] [My Xterra] [Offroading] [Links] [Xcursions]
These are a few checks you can do at home on the weekend, they won't take any time and they give you a good idea of the health of your Xterra.
Equipment needed:
Tire Gauge
Paper Towel (or Napkin)
Check for obvious damage
Walk around the Xterra looking for damage.
Check the underside for obvious damage or leaks.
Check under the hood for damage or disconnected hoses.
Check Tire Pressure
Pretty easy, use a quality tire gauge to check the tire pressure. The pressure will depend on the type of tires you have and the weight of your Xterra.
Check Wheel Lug Nuts
Make sure the lug nuts are still tight
If you have 4WD check the bolts around the hub to make sure none are loose.
Check Wipers
Check wipers for cracks and damage.
Check Lights
Check to make sure all marker and brake lights still work.

Check that the coolant level in the overflow tank is between the "Min" and "Max" level.
Make sure the coolant is up to the top of the of the neck of the radiator.
Check Engine Oil Level
Bring the engine up to temp.
Turn the engine off and let it sit for 1 minute.
Take out the oil dipstick, wipe it off, and put it back in.
Take the dipstick back out and measure from the crosshatched area.
Check the Auto Transmission Fluid Level
Warm up the transmission (driving 2-4 miles should do it).
With the brake on shift the transmission through all positions and back to "Park".
With the engine still running take out the A/T dipstick, wipe it off, and put it back in.
Take the dipstick back out and measure from the "Hot" side.
Check Power Steering Fluid Level
Check the fluid level from the "Hot" mark if the engine has been running, from the "Cold" mark if the engine hasn't run for an hour.

Make sure the fluid is up into the neck of the reservoir.
Check Brake Fluid Reservoir
